Brooklyn, NY, July, 1863. One sheet, 8.5 x 10.75 inches, printed on one side. Tattered at edges, some loss to blank margins. A small embossed stamp in the lower corner is a figure of a ship. This is a letter to commanders of the Union forces, describing a Medal which is being prepared, which may be awarded to members of the military who are residents of Brooklyn of Kings County, or who are serving in a regiment from Kings County. "The Medal is to be of silver, about the size of the Crimean and Indian Medals furnished by the British Government. The device is an Eagle defending the Union (represented by the American Shield) against the Serpent Secession ...." The text describes who is eligible to receive the medal, and how many copies are to be awarded to the various services of the Army & Navy. The final note at the bottom is: "Please have the contents of this known to all Kings County men in your command." This may have been posted for viewing by members of the armed forces.
